Vision Jet Type Rating and What to Expect
It’s always rewarding to see a pilot reach a major milestone, and recently I had the privilege of flying with newly type-rated Vision Jet pilot, Brian Cowart, during the final flight of his Supervised Operating Experience (SOE). As a mentor pilot, moments like this remind me why I enjoy what I do — helping new Vision Jet owners and pilots gain the confidence and experience to operate the SF50 safely, efficiently, and with a deep understanding of the aircraft’s unique systems.
A Conversation at 30,000 Feet
During our last SOE flight together, Brian and I had an in-depth conversation about his journey through the SF50 type rating process. We discussed how thorough preparation — both before and during training — makes all the difference when it comes to success in the simulator and in real-world operations.
Brian shared his perspective on what to expect during training, emphasizing how valuable it is to study systems, profiles, and automation management before arriving for the course. We also talked through what future trainees can anticipate during the type rating checkride, including scenario-based decision-making, single-pilot workload management, and demonstrating sound use of the Perspective Touch+ avionics suite.
From Training to Confidence
By the time we completed his SOE flights, Brian had transitioned from simulator proficiency to real-world confidence — the kind that comes from hands-on experience in the Vision Jet environment. His attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to continuous learning made him an excellent example for future SF50 pilots preparing for their own type rating.
